Ripe tannins with rich cherry-berry and currant flavors are highlighted by a gentle top note of sweet oak-spice from barrel aging that carries through the velvety finish.

  WINEMAKER NOTES:

The mild summer conditions created optimal conditions for the 2001 Merlot grapes to reach their maximum maturity. Extended hang time allowed ample time for ripening and intense flavor and aroma development. The grapes developed soft, ripe tannins and increased depth in color. Certain lots had long maceration times on the skins after fermentation adding to the wines complexity, while others were pressed young to capture the youthful fruit character.

The nose explodes with rich cherry and currant aromas with hints of cola, berry, oak-spice, and vanilla. In the mouth, balance and softness are apparent, yet with ripe tannins, rich cherry and currant flavors highlighted by a gentle top note of sweet oak-spice from barrel aging that carries through the velvety finish.

  FOOD RECOMMENDATIONS:

The 2001 Bonterra Merlot provides a versatile wine for the table, pairing well with grilled salmon and ahi, mushroom pasta, and roast meats and poultry.
