Bonterra Organic Estates’ History
1987
Inspired by an organic produce garden, the Fetzer family plants their first organic vineyard in Mendocino County, California.
1990
The first vintage of organic wine is released.
1996
McNab Ranch becomes Bonterra’s first certified Biodynamic® vineyard.
2016
Bonterra is named “American Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast magazine.
2017
Bonterra celebrates its 30th anniversary of organic farming.
2020
Bonterra becomes the first winery in the world to achieve Climate Neutral certification.
2021
As of 2021, Bonterra is the largest Regenerative Organic Certified™ winery in the world.

Discover Bonterra Organic Estates: An Organic Legacy Rooted in Excellence
Bonterra’s story began in Mendocino County in 1987 with a simple idea: if organic farming could produce incredibly flavorful fruits and vegetables, what could it do for wine grapes?
Inspired by the organic produce grown in the Fetzer Culinary Garden, founder Barney Fetzer brought that same approach to the vineyard—helping pioneer organic grape growing in California and establishing a commitment to thoughtful farming that continues today.
As Barney said, “What’s good for the earth is good for the grape. And what’s good for the grape is good for the wine.”
Today, that pioneering spirit continues to shape how we make wine. Our core Bonterra collection is made with organically grown grapes, farmed with practices that prioritize healthy soils, biodiversity and thriving vineyards. Across our wines, we remain focused on thoughtful farming, responsible business practices and finding better ways to make delicious wine.
