- Robin K.Not as good as previousI've purchased approximately a half dozen cases of the Bonterra Pinot Noir, all of which were delicious. Not so with this case. The flavor of the wine consumed thus far is significantly different than previous purchases and somewhat vinegary. A bit disappointing; hopefully not all bottles in this case will taste the same.August 14, 2023

Our 2022 Bonterra Pinot Noir is thoughtfully crafted to capture the variety’s delicate character and depth. Hand-harvested grapes from select Mendocino County vineyards were destemmed and gently crushed before undergoing a slow fermentation in open-top tanks, allowing for optimal color and flavor extraction through gentle cap management. The wine then rested on its lees for ten months in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, developing a refined structure, layered complexity, and a silky, elegant finish.
Our Pinot Noir shows brilliant clarity and a light mahogany red color, with cherry and pomegranate aromas and flavors brimming from the glass. Earthy notes weave around the fruit with mushroom, Earl Grey tea, and hints of white pepper along the edge. The wine is light-bodied with balanced acidity and small, refined tannins that concludes in a bright, mouthwatering finish. It will mellow and age nicely for three to five years after release.
The 2022 Bonterra Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes grown in Mendocino County, including from our organic and biodynamic McNab Ranch and Butler Ranch vineyards. The high elevation, daytime heat, and nighttime coastal winds at Butler Ranch combine to create especially fine Pinot Noir grapes
Discover the beauty of sustainable winemaking with a Bonterra Pinot Noir case—twelve bottles of elegance crafted to share or savor over time. This light-bodied red wine offers brilliant clarity and a light mahogany hue, with aromas of red cherry and pomegranate. Every glass reflects the character of Pinot Noir grown in Mendocino County, where cool coastal nights and organic farming practices produce grapes of exceptional purity and balance.
By choosing this wine, you're investing in more than just good wine—you're supporting a sustainable approach to winemaking that values biodiversity, healthy soils, and the long-term vitality of the land. Our commitment to crafting expressive red wines begins in our organic vineyards and continues with gentle winemaking techniques that respect the integrity of the fruit.
Whether you're stocking up for the season, building a red wine sampler, or selecting a thoughtful gift for a fellow enthusiast, this Pinot Noir case is a versatile choice. Don't forget to explore our other exquisite collections, including Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
What is the difference between “Organic Wine” and wine “Made With Organic Grapes”?
The grapes we grow that go into wines we label as “made with organic grapes” are held to the same standards as grapes used to make “organic wines”. The only difference between the two categories is a decision to add a small amount of sulfur at the final stage of wine fermentation. Sulfur is a naturally occurring compound used to end fermentation, this ensures the wine does not continue to ferment after it is bottled.
Our wine is “made with organic grapes”, which means that USDA regulations allow us to use a small amount of sulfur to stabilize the wine just before it is bottled, ensuring a consistent, high-quality product every time. The sulfur we choose to add to our wines regularly falls below the regulated amount.
Regulations for “organic wine” do not permit use of any added sulfur. Because organic wine has no added sulfur/sulfites, it is often less consistent in taste and flavor and it ages poorly.
Is Bonterra Pinot Noir made with organic grapes?
Yes, Bonterra Pinot Noir is made with 100% certified organic grapes.
Are there sulfites in Bonterra's Pinot Noir wine?
Our winemakers have made the decision to use a limited amount of sulfites in our wines to ensure that the wine you open is the same quality and has the same flavor derived from our organic grape varieties remain consistent from bottling to opening. That's why our wines are labeled as 'made with organic grapes.'
The USDA’s “made with organic grapes” certification allows a maximum of 100ppm of sulfites in wines made with organic grapes – that’s less than 1/3 of the amount of sulfites conventional wines are allowed. The average total sulfites for Bonterra wines are between 70 to 90ppm, reflecting our commitment to both quality and the integrity of our grape selection.
The “organic wine” regulations do not permit use of any added sulfur. Because organic wine has no added sulfur/sulfites, it is often less consistent in taste and flavor and it ages poorly.
We recommend that you contact your physician regarding specific health concerns.
Do organic wines contain sulfur?
Yes, virtually every wine contains sulfur, including organic wines. Sulfur occurs naturally during winemaking as a by-product of fermentation.
Sulfur is used in winemaking to stop fermentation, so the wine does not continue to ferment once it is bottled. Our wine is “made with organic grapes”, which means that USDA regulations allow us to use a small amount of sulfur to stabilize the wine just before it is bottled. The sulfur we choose to add to our wines regularly falls below the regulated amount.
Does Bonterra Pinot Noir contain Glyphosate?
We actively avoid glyphosate. It is not used in our estate vineyards, nor in partner vineyards we source from.
